Your journey starts here
Drive Avis in Gran Canaria and discover a near-perfect-circle volcanic island, much of it protected as a UNESCO bio-reserve. After bronzing on one of the 60 beaches here, time spent off the beaten periphery is amply rewarded.Drive south for bare red-rock mountains, purr calmly around the switchback roads to the island’s centre, in Roque Nublo Park, where invigorating walks through wild-flower-strewn valleys await. A stroll around nearby Tejeda, a pretty village, is highly recommended.
Don’t leave Gran Canaria without parking up to peruse the cobbled historical quarter of Vegueta in northeast capital Las Palmas.
Worried you’ll get lost?
To make your journey even easier, we can include a sat nav with your car so you can relax. Request yours when you arrive at the rental location.
Remember, you don’t have to drive full-circle: make the most of one way car hire across Gran Canaria.
Avis travel recommendation: Telde
Just 15 minutes from the airport by car, the historic city of Telde is a good base to begin your tour around the island. One of the Pre-Hispanic kingdoms of Gran Canaria, Telde offers visitors plenty of history and charm. The archaeological sites of Bailadero, Tufia, Cuatro Puertas, Tara and Cendro provide a spectacular insight into the ancient lives of the island’s original settlers. These caves, where these early inhabitants once lived, are a must-see.
Telde’s historic centre, San Juan, marks the founding location of the city and the striking architecture here has centuries of stories to tell. This is where the Church of St. John the Baptist stands. Built between 1909 and 1977, it showcases 20th century neo-gothic architecture.
Just a 15-minute drive from the sea, Telde is also close to a horde of utopian beaches. With jagged cliffs towering above beautiful stretches of sandy shoreline, the paradise is endless. Gando bay, where the first Europeans landed in Gran Canaria, is a top pick – as are San Borondón and Ojos de Garza.
