Plan your trip to Las Palmas
Las Palmas is the capital city of Gran Canaria, one of the Spanish Canary Islands, which lie approximately 150km off the north west coast of Africa. The most populous city in the Canary Islands, founded in 1478, Las Palmas sits in the north east corner of the island. Reflecting its long history in recent years the oldest quarter, Vegueta, has been declared a UNESCO world heritage site. An Avis hire car is the perfect way to explore Las Palmas and the island beyond.
Las Palmas has two beautiful bays and four main beaches, Las Canteras, Las Alcaravaneras, La Laja and El Confital. Las Canteras is the largest and most popular with tourists. Las Alcaravaneras is the place to go for water sports and beach volleyball, and La Laja and El Confital are popular with surfers.
Las Palmas is a noted cultural centre in the Canary Islands, hosting many festivals throughout the year, including a carnival and music festival. The Casa-Museo de Colón focuses on the history of the Canary Islands and its relations with America including the House of Columbus. Families should consider the Maritime Museum, which has a giant pool where visitors can handle a large ship in an interactive bay.
The Atlantic Center of Modern Art contains some of the most important references for cultural and artistic life in the Canary Islands. Nightlife in Las Palmas tends to centre around the historic district of Vegueta, with lots of bars and restaurants, as well as the Port area where there are a number of nightclubs.
