The volcanic island of Pico has rich lava soil which is perfect for vines to grow and The Vineyards of Pico is another UNESCO site worth exploring. The unusual man-made walls that protect the crops and date back to 15th century are worth seeing.
The largest island, São Miguel, is made up of two volcanic ranges with three breathtakingly beautiful crater lakes. It’s fascinating to explore and is also where the archipelagos capital Ponta Delgada is located. With a collection of museums, churches and architecture dating back to the 17th century it’s the perfect place to explore and enjoy delicacies such as the local fresh fish.

Driving from Ponta Delgada on São Miguel Island it’s just half an hour via the EN1-1A and EN5-2A to Lagoa do Fogo, the most remote of the crater lakes. With a stunning mountain backdrop, the lake offers a dramatic place to hike, picnic or enjoy a spot of quiet contemplation on the sandy shores.
Plantações de Chá Gorreana
Drive from Ponta Delgada on São Miguel Island via the EN1-1A to visit Plantações de Chá Gorreana or the "Gorreana Tea Estate". Attractively located on the slopes near Ribeira Grande, this 40-hectare estate is Europe’s only tea plantation producing an incredible 30-tonnes of tea per year. Visitors can take a tour of the factory to see how the tea is processed, spy antique tea making machinery in the museum and enjoy a refreshing beverage on the attractive terrace.
Furnas
From Ponta Delgada (Sao Miguel Island) it’s around a 45-minute drive to Furnas. One of The Azores' most popular attractions, Furnas reveals a beautiful lake, valley and village. There is a fabulous botanic gardens, Terra Nostra Park, to explore, as well as an excellent golf course. Those in search of relaxation won’t want to miss the chance to bathe in the thermal springs which are thought by some to have great healing properties.
