Plan your trip to the Balearics
The Balearic Islands, an archipelago off the eastern coast of Spain, have been attracting holidaymakers for decades with a winning combination of beach-life, historic treasures and modern resorts. Pick up your Avis hire car from one of our convenient locations and explore at your own pace. The four islands all have their own distinct charm and character: Mallorca, the largest, is a good ‘all-rounder’; resort-wise, Alcúdia, Cala Bona and Puerto Pollença are popular with families; while Sa Coma, with its selection of restaurants and tree-lined promenade, is perfect for couples.
Drive inland to visit the dramatic Tramuntana mountain range which is dotted with pretty whitewashed villages, monasteries and greenery ideal for hiking and cycling. Mallorca’s capital Palma, with its exquisite cathedral and array of tapas bars, is another big draw.
Menorca, Mallorca’s little sister island, offers a more low-key holiday base with Cala’n Forcat, Punta Prima and Santo Tomas promising lazy beach days and relaxing evenings. There are plenty of family-friendly days out with numerous water-parks, indoor play-areas and a zoo. History buffs can head to Ciutadella, Menorca’s former capital, to explore Gothic churches, cobbled streets and lavish 17th-century palaces.
Ibiza has everything that the other islands have to offer ... plus a little extra. Known as a clubber’s paradise it also has its fair share of romantic, family friendly and low-key resorts. However if late nights are your thing San Antonio is still the place to be. Ibiza’s charming old town, which has World Heritage site status, is also worth a visit.
For a complete get-away-from-it all escape Formentera is ideal. Most of the action is focused around the beach and most of them have been awarded Blue Flag Status. Nightlife is low-key and Es Pujols, on the north coast, has a cluster of open air cafes and cocktail bars.

The Balearic Islands of Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera offer a host of attractions from great beaches to historic old towns.Mallorca – Caves of Drach
Drive for an hour from Mallorca de Mallorca Airport via the Ma-15 or Ma-19 to reach the enchanting Caves of Drach. This spectacular system of underground caves located near Porto Cristo are one of the island’s top attractions. Boat trips across the lake are available and tours feature a 10-minute violin quartet performance on the lake.
Menorca – Nateta d’es Tudons
From Menorca Airport via the Me-7 and Me-1 it’s around a 55-minute drive to explore Neteta d’es Tudons. This is one of the many fascinating prehistoric monuments scattered across the island, but perhaps the most famous. The unusual rounded structure, dating back to around 1000 BC, was thought to have once been used as a dwelling, watchtower or burial place.
Ibiza – Es Caná Hippy Market
No trip to Ibiza is complete without visiting one of the island's famous Hippy Markets. Drive for around 35 minutes to check out the legendary Es Caná Hippy Market.
