Munich city centre is around 45 minutes drive from the airport, via the A92 and A9.The capital of Bavaria, Munich is famous for its beer, Oktoberfest and impressive buildings. Almost destroyed in the two World Wars, it now offers great museums, architecture and culture. The New Town Hall (Neus Rathaus) is a Gothic masterpiece in the centre of Munich. Asam Church (AsamKirche) is a late Baroque and Roccoco church built by the Asam brothers, the inside is luxuriously decorated.
Munich is also great for shopping, visit Bavaria’s largest shopping centre, Olympia Einkaufszentrum, which is only a 25 minute drive from the centre and has 135 shops, cafes and restaurants all under its impressive glass roof.
Sample German treats such as bratwurst (sausage) and leberkase (meat loaf) from the farmers' market in the city centre and the Hofbrauhaus, where you’ll find more traditional Bavarian food and of course, German beer on offer.
Road trips from Munich
Rothenburg-ob-der-TauberRothenburg-ob-der-Tauber (the red castle on the Tauber) is a picturesque and quaint medieval town. You’ll find narrow streets, turrets, fountains and towers. Walk along the city walls and climb to the top of the town hall for stunning views. There are a number of museums to enjoy including the Christmas museum, the Doll and Toy museum and the Medieval Criminal museum.
Deutsche Alpenstrasse
Why not drive the majestic Deutsche Alpenstrasse (the German Alpine Road) from Munich in your Avis hire car. The route is 450 km/280 miles in total and will take you through the magnificent Alps. You’ll find lakes, mountains, historic towns and villages – stop off at your leisure to explore and take in the breath-taking views.
Bad Tölz is a charming town that you’ll find along the Alpine Road and is a perfect place to stop off for lunch, a wander around or shopping.
Romantic Road
Another famous route is Germany’s ‘Romantic Road’, which will take you past well preserved medieval towns and romantic, picturesque castles. Country driving laws
- Mobile phones may only be used with a headset or hands-free device
- At crossroads or junctions in urban areas, you have the right of way if there is a road sign with a yellow diamond at the intersection. A white triangle with a red border indicates you must wait for the oncoming traffic to clear
- Be aware that on unrestricted motorways (autobahns) you can still get a speeding ticket for driving too fast for the prevailing traffic or weather conditions
- A number of German cities have low emission zones that require you to have a special permit to drive through them
- In cities, if you see a blue sign with white car, children and bike symbols on it, you must drive at walking speed
- If you're caught committing a driving offence, the police can issue an on-the-spot fine

All speed signs will be in km/h.
For a standard Avis rental vehicle with no trailers:
- Urban areas: 50km/h (30 mph)
- Rural areas: 100km/h (62 mph)
- Motorways (autobahns): None unless shown. 130km/h (80 mph) is the suggested maximum
