The surrounding area
Hikers will flock to the Deister in the southwest of the city. The northernmost low mountain range of Germany rises 405m at its highest elevation and is a real outdoor paradise for walkers, mountain bikers, families and joggers. And in the immediate vicinity are old manors and historic mills.
Schloss Marienburg might tempt you to the south of the city. In the middle of the 19th century, King George V had this fairytale castle built and gave it to his wife Marie as proof of his love. The castle is one of the most impressive architectural monuments in Germany and can be visited daily from March to November. In addition, regular cultural events take place in this unique, historic setting.
Half an hour's drive west of the state capital lies the Steinhuder Meer, Lower Saxony's largest inland waterway. The 32-square-kilometre lake is popular among the Hanoverians as a recreational destination. Think hiking around the lake or boating to the island fortress Wilhelmstein. When the weather is nice, you can see thousands of sailboats on the water. And when it's cold enough in the winter and the lake freezes, you can skate on the Steinhuder Meer.
