Avis and the environment
Avis' journey of sustainabilitySince 2008, Avis has embarked on a heightened journey of sustainability with three pillars being Environment, Community and Brand Ambassadors. Environmental focus has featured intensive water recycling (now almost 100 million litres of water recycled per annum) and SA first company to achieve Carbon Neutral accreditation. A number of other environmental initiatives has led to Avis receiving a number of awards for their approach in this area of business. On the Community front, Avis has embarked on over 50 projects to uplift communities where their own staff become involved in tree planting, classroom construction, feeding schemes etc. The Brand Ambassador program aligns its people values with that of the company, whilst investing in staff development and entrenching a customer, community and environment centric ethos that runs deep throughout the organisation.

In this regard, Avis has entrenched a flexible and effective sustainability programme which is constantly revised and gains momentum in our quest to reduce our load on the environment. This is a journey, a journey with many instances of realization and triumphs along the way and our people are excited and committed to our journey of sustainability at Avis”.
The Avis ethos of conserving our heritage, wildlife and environment, was installed in the 1970’s, when Avis committed to the support and sponsorship of organisations dedicated to the conservation of wildlife. Over the past 4 decades, Avis have been strong supporters of the WWF, Wilderness Leadership School, SanParks, SA Wide Life College and contributed to many other related projects.
Since 2006, Avis management expanded its conservation approach, to include other environmental matters, such as waste recycling and water conservation, which, following a programme to introduce intensive water reduction and recycling processes into our facilities since 2008, has produced water recycling to over 103 million litres of water per annum. In addition, Avis was the first car rental company in SA to introduce Hybrid vehicle technology to the rental market in 2007. In 2008, Avis committed to reducing and off-setting their own business GHG emissions and in 2009, became South Africa’s first Carbon Neutral car rental accredited company in accordance with UN protocol. In 2008, our appointment of a dedicated Sustainability Department took our efforts to new heights, internalizing the energy and increasing our company’s effort and focus on real change in the areas of our business that works against the ethos of sustainable and environmentally friendly business practice.

Avis cares about the communitySocial responsibility is an ongoing process which requires the attention and input of all organisations and individuals, to make a difference to people and places where the need is greatest.
Ever since the inception of our new democracy in 1994, South Africans as a nation have become more aware of the need to embrace the change and provide assistance to those in need. Our country has hundreds of communities in dire need of upliftment and provision of basic resources.
As an organisation, Avis has heard the call for help by many of our citizens and our Avis Cares program has taken on a host of projects to assist with the upliftment of our local communities.What makes the Avis Cares program so special is the immense support it receives from its Brand Ambassadors, who have signed up as volunteers and give unselfishly of their own time, energy and money toward the program.
Below is a list of community upliftment projects that Avis and its Brand Ambassadors have driven and worked on, to make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate than others.
Avis cares about it's Brand AmbassadorsAt Avis, people will always be more important than cars. This rings true, not only for our customers, but also for our own staff. Our people have always been the strength behind the brand, but this just does not happen. This requires concerted and ongoing effort and dedication by management, through numerous interventions are areas of focus.
Since inception of the Avis brand in the early 1970’s, the leadership and management have focused on the development and caring of its Ambassadors, concentrating on training and a number of other actions which truly demonstrate to its people, that their interests , growth and wellbeing are held dear to the company. The external impact of this ethos on our customers is simply immense.
