The station was opened in order to fulfil, not only the industrial needs of areas such as Nambithi/Ladysmith area, Vryheid, Newcastle, Harysmith and Estcourt, but also the large tourism market, that come from all over the world to see majestic mountains of the Drakensburg as well as the Historical sights and experiences, such as the Anglo Boer War, the Battle of Blood River, the Siege of Ladysmith and many more.
The lastest industrial "arrival" is the Ingula Pumped Storage Scheme. The Ingula power station is a R16,6-billion project, which is a pumped storage scheme situated on the border between the Free State and KwaZula-Natal (KZN), is currently on schedule to commission its first unit in September 2012.
