Avis Set For Another Iconic Cape Town Cycle Tour

Avis Cycle Tour 2020

CAPE TOWN, February 2020 – Avis is once again the Car Rental Partner for the iconic event, the largest individually timed cycle race in the world, which this year takes place on 8 March 2020.

This year sees the 42nd running of the world-famous annual tour, which is the climax of the Cape Town Cycle Tour Lifecycle Week. The week is an eight-day celebration of all things cycling, which includes a Junior Tour at the Cape Town Stadium precinct and South Africa’s biggest cycling exhibition, the Cape Town Cycle Tour Expo.

The 2020 edition once again sees the race start from the Grand Parade in the heart of South Africa’s Mother City. As cyclists book their flights for the fairest Cape, the famed Avis Bike Mechanics team is priming its equipment for another year of excitement.

Avis Bike Mechanics follow the route on race day in branded Avis gear, providing free emergency bike repairs to cyclists along the road, to get them back in the race with as little fuss as possible.

“We introduced the Avis Bike Mechanics team during the 2015 Cape Town Cycle Tour and it has since become a much-loved – and much supported – part of the race,” said Rainer Gottschick, CEO of Avis Rent a Car Southern Africa. “We are proud to contribute to the success of this iconic event.”

Avis has been Car Rental Partner to the tour since 2013, providing sponsored vehicles during the build-up as well as at the event itself. Three Avis vehicles lead the riders around the scenic Cape Peninsula, and Avis also provides logistics vehicles, VIP cars, transport for volunteers and media, as well as sweep vehicles for breakdowns and stragglers at the back of the race.

This year, Avis has partnered with Wattbike South Africa to make the 2020 Cycle Tour even more exciting. At the tour expo, Avis and Wattbike will be giving away a Wattbike worth R71 000, as well as several other prizes.

The tour is the first event outside Europe to be included in the International Cycling Union's Golden Bike Series.

“The Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust is extremely proud to be partners with a company like Avis,” said David Bellairs: Director of Cape Town Cycle Tour. “It is only through partnerships like this that the Trust, that the tour supports, can maximise its efforts in raising much-needed funds for charitable beneficiaries.”
With as many as 35 000 cyclists taking part, the tour is the world's largest individually timed cycle race.
Proceeds from the Cape Town Cycle Tour and events during Lifecycle Week go to the Pedal Power Association (PPA) and The Rotary Club of Claremont. More than R45 million has been distributed back into social upliftment and cycling development in the past five years through PPA and Rotary.
