Avis Safedrive and Discovery Insure partnership

Avis Safedrive named Discovery Insure strategic partner of the year

JOHANNESBURG, December 2019 – Avis SafeDrive – a smartphone app that rewards Avis rental customers for safe driving – has won the Discovery Insure Strategic Partner of the Year Award at the recent Discovery Insure Partner Awards.

The Avis SafeDrive mobility innovation was launched in 2017, when Avis Rent a Car partnered with Discovery Insure.  The app is available on Android and iOS and integrates with Discovery Insure’s breakthrough telematics technology to help make South African roads safer.

For a nominal cost, the app allows customers to access trip data, see their driving scores, learn how to improve them and get daily rewards. The app’s safety features include ImpactAlert, which provides immediate assistance if a vehicle is in an accident, a panic button function, severe weather alerts and access to the Avis 24-hour emergency call centre.

“We’re proud to be acknowledged for the Avis SafeDrive partnership, and we are excited that we’ve been able to give our customers a safer driving experience,” said Rainer Gottschick, Chief Executive at Avis Rent a Car southern Africa.

“Avis data shows that rental cars are involved in a higher rate of accidents. With Avis SafeDrive, clients receive immediate feedback on their driving, and are guided to accumulate points for good driving to unlock daily rewards such as a free coffee, smoothies or meals. We’ve seen it drive better safety performance for our customers.”

The Avis SafeDrive partnership has seen Avis safely transport more than 40 000 clients using the award-winning technology.

The success of the South African-developed programme has led to its being introduced in the Netherlands recently, showcasing the international relevance of the locally produced safety technology.

“Discovery were incredibly supportive when we launched the product,” said Gottschick. “It’s encouraging to have our productive partnership recognised and to see the idea rolled out globally. It’s a feather in the cap for Avis, and for South African innovation.”
