Things to see and do nearby
Museums and galleries
A quick tour of the city reveals the Ann Bryant Art Gallery, Gately House, Calgary Transport Museum, Steve Biko Garden of Remembrance, and the East London Natural History Museum which cracks the nod to extinct (and almost extinct) species, with a dodo egg and a stuffed Coelacanth on display.
East London Zoo
If living animals are more your style, take a leisurely drive along Esplanade Street to see the dolphins at play among the waves. Alternatively you might prefer to wander around the East London Zoo for an hour or two to see the tigers, jaguar and African wild dogs.
Wind your windows down and head out of town to the Inkwenkwezi Private Game Reserves for an elephant-back ride, or Mpongo Private Game Reserve where you can enjoy a casual meal after your game drive.
East London Coast Nature Reserve
This loose conglomeration of 10 separate coastal reserves and 2 state forests is scattered all over the Eastern Cape, preserving a wide range of species and ecosystems under one banner.
Once you have had your fill of these serene habitats, head back along the open road to your starting point at Avis East London Airport.
Before you leave
If you have time to spare on arrival or departure, you can indulge in a bite to eat at the coffee shop or fast food restaurant located within the airport terminal, browse in the sport shop, tempt your taste buds at the candy store, or even enjoy a sundowner at the Mile High Pub if you have done your driving for the day.
Those who are spending the night will find many an option to choose from within 10km of the East London Airport. Book into Cove View for a luxurious seaside stay, or the harbour facing Majestic Hotel at budget rates.
We look forward to setting the wheels in motion for your Avis journey of discovery around the gorgeous Eastern Cape Province, no matter how long you stay or how often you visit.
