Waivers Explained
Ensuring you're covered...
Renting a car? Ensure that your rental agreement includes a basic level of waivers so you are sufficiently covered in the event of an accident or loss. Most rental rates include elements such as theft protection and damage waivers but always read the small print. From there it’s easy - simply initial beside the required waivers and you’re covered!
Damage and theft waiver
Limited coverage for passenger liability and third party motor liability subject to terms and conditions. Cover for loss by fire is normally included as well as damages to the rental car but this may not include loss or damage through civil unrest.
Collision Damage Waiver (CDW)
Should you be involved in an accident, you would be responsible for a specific amount as indicated on the rental agreement or Rates Sheet. This would include damage to the vehicle or part thereof, or cost of the damage repair, whichever is lower.
Super Collision Damage Waiver (SCDW)
This means that you are responsible for a minimal liability payment as a result of collision damage and alleviates you as the renter of the liability of the full cost of the repair or part thereof. Important to note is that if your rented vehicle is driven by someone other than yourself and that person is involved in an accident, you are fully responsible for damages incurred, so don’t opt for this situation.
Theft Loss Waiver (TLW)
In the event of your rented vehicle being stolen, you will be responsible for a certain amount as indicated on the rental agreement or Rates Sheet for the replacement of the vehicle.
Super Theft Loss Waiver (STLW)
This is always a good option as it reduces the liability that you are responsible for arising from theft or part thereof.
Declining Damage and Theft Options
Avis strongly recommends against this option as this makes you fully liable for all damages incurred.
What does the Windscreen Tyre Damage Waiver Cover?
WTDW includes damage to the windscreen and tyres of a vehicle. These two items can be defined as follows:
Windscreen: Any window in the vehicle is covered under WDTW. This includes door windows, rear window and windscreen.
Tyres: The vehicle's tyre, including the spare wheel. The metal rim, hubcaps and alloy mags wheels are also covered under WTDW.
Loss of tyres, rims or hubcaps are not covered under WTDW but will fall under the Theft Loss Waiver.
Some valuable tips from Avis to consider:
- Don’t leave valuables or personal belongings on display.
- Always lock your rented vehicle when leaving it unattended.
- Drive responsibly and steer away from unsuitable roads, as this may just end up costing you money.
- Always report a theft to the police and obtain a case number.
- For added protection, Avis includes 24-hour roadside assistance free of charge in your rental price.
