Discovering the city
The splendid palaces of Trieste showcase neoclassical, liberty and baroque, cohabiting in full harmony with Roman remains and buildings of Hapsburg style. Your visit should start from the biggest sea square in the whole of Europe: Piazza Unità d'Italia, which opens on to the gulf and is surrounded by palaces and public buildings.Illuminating the gulf is the Lighthouse of Victory, built on one of the bastions of an old Austrian fort, also serves as a memorial for the fallen World War I.
The main religious building is the Basilica of San Giusto: the cathedral was born from the fusion of the church dedicated to the Vergine Assunta and the one dedicated to San Giusto. Worthy of note is the Gothic rose window inserted into the sandstone with which the façade and the bell tower were made.
The Triestines have a real passion for coffee: this is the city of cafes, historic places with their own retro charm that recall the Middle European past and are inextricably linked to literature. A must stop in the oldest, the Caffè Tommaseo, or at Caffè Tergesteo, known for its stained glass windows depicting historical episodes of the city.
Take your rental car to visit the Castle of Miramare, once the residence of Massimiliano d’Asburgo-Lorena, overlooking the gulf and surrounded by a beautiful park, or that of Duino, historical residence of the princes Von Thurm und Taxis, which stands on a rocky spur above the sea.
In Borgo, about fifteen kilometers from the city, to admire the famous Grotta Gigante, the largest cave open to the public full of stalactites and stalagmites
